Lawmakers want court to legalise ‘budget padding

Image
A group of serving and former members of the House of Representatives have concluded plans to approach the courts for the interpretation of Section 80 (4) of the 1999 Constitution as amended. This they say, is in efforts at correcting the impression that Nigerian lawmakers criminally inflate budget proposals submitted by the executive arm of government. The lawmakers said their intent is to ask the courts to give an interpretation on the ownership of budget between the executive and the legislature. The section of the constitution the lawmakers are seeking interpretation for confers absolute power on the legislature over public funds. Section 80 (4) “No money shall be withdrawn from the Consolidated Revenue Fund or any other public fund of the Federation, except in the manner prescribed by the National Assembly”. The lawmakers, under the aegis of Faculty Board of Initiatives, FBI, said the controversy generated by the budget padding issue has made it expedien...

He said while recently addressing some delegates in Ekiti state, “I have been touring 17 states of the federation for just about a week now and I’m still strong.” All that touring is now wasted efforts as southern leaders of PDP, finally resolved to zone the national chairmanship position of the party to the South-West geopolitical zone. The party also resolved to zone national treasurer and deputy national publicity secretary positions to the South West. The position of the first deputy nati...

Blunders: How safe are Nigerians under IGP Idris? Last Friday blunder by Adamawa State commissioner of police, Mohammed Ghazzali, has heightened apprehensions over insecurity of lives under IGP, Ibrahim Idris. If there is anything Nigerians are gravely concerned about at the moment, aside the dwindling economy, it is insecurity and quality of decision making in the police force. Reports of armed robberies, kidnappings, militancy in the Niger Delta and the rampaging menace of the Fulani herdsmen against farmers, especially in the North Central geopolitical zone of the country, have become of serious concerns. But recent actions of the Nigerian Police, the government body saddled with the responsibility of detecting, and , or preventing such crimes has rather raised more concerns among Nigerians as to how safe they really are in their own land. Last week, there were reports of an attack in Adamawa State, in the North East, by suspected Fulani herdsmen which left...

The reaction I got shows the mentality of the people. If I say I’m a virgin, I am and if I say I am not, then I am not. They tell me to go get married, should I go after  someone else’s  husband?” She added “Everybody thinks one should get married from age 18. A lot of marriages are complicated.
