Cameroon Deports 100,000 Nigerian Asylum Seekers

Image
Cameroon has deported 100,000 Nigerian refugees in the hope of stemming the spread of the terrorist group Boko Haram, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said on Wednesday. The group said in its new report that the deportation defied a plea by the UN refugee agency to not return anyone to north-eastern Nigeria, where Boko Haram have killed thousands of people, until security and the human rights situation improve considerably. The HRW report noted that the deported people were likely to face new violence, displacement and destitution. The group, which investigates allegations of human rights abuses worldwide, says the report is based on interviews with more than 60 refugees. It added that soldiers tortured, assaulted and sexually exploited Nigerian asylum seekers and denied them access to the UN refugee agency. The rights group claimed Cameroon deported, often violently, tens of thousands of the refugees since early 2015. “The Cameroonian military torture and abuse of Ni...

Biafra: How Nnamdi Kanu destroyed IPOB – University Don

Image
Director, Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies (CPSS), University of Ilorin, Dr. Mahfouz Adedimeji, has observed that the ‘animalizing’ of those who are against the actualization of Biafra by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has led to the alienation of the group. Speaking in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, the Unity Don maintained that the IPOB’s agitation for the sovereign state of Biafra as a misplacement of priorities. The University don while calling on agitators to embrace dialogue, likened IPOB agitation to cutting off one’s head to cure a headache. Adedimeji warned IPOB that there would be greater problems after secession, which they won’t be able to handle. According to Adedimeji, “There is an overarching message of the Peace Day that we need to internalize. “The message is the need to work together as one people regardless of our ethnic, religious, political or ideological differences. “...

The Origin of 'Mammy Markets' in Nigerian Army Barracks

Image
The Origin of 'Mammy Markets' in Nigerian Army Barracks What is now known as"Mammy Market" in all barracks nationwide, came to be as a result of the industry of Mrs Anthony Ochefu. Thanks to an Idoma local brew called "enyi". Now, nobody remembers to recognise this history maker and accord the honour due to her. In 1959, Mammy Ode, a young girl from Jericho-Ugboju in the present Otukpo local government area of Benue state was married to Anthony Aboki Ochefu, a young non-commissioned military officer who had just been posted to Enugu from Abeokuta. They were quartered at the Army Barracks, Abakpa, Enugu. To beat idleness and perhaps earn some money to support her young family, Mrs Mammy Ochefu established a business of selling soft drinks. She also prepared gruel, which is popularly called 'Umu or enyi' in Idoma, or kunu in Hausa, for sale to the soldiers in the barrack to help quench their thirst and energise them. She soon became popular with se...

Image
Ahead of the upcoming Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, National convention, former Minister of Transport and Chieftain of the party, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, has said ex- National Vice-Chairman of the party, South, Olabode George, would not step down for anybody. Babatope, who stated this while addressing newsmen in Lagos, maintained that Bode George remains the best candidate for the party’s National Chairman. The former Minister faulted the call by a group within the party that George should step down for a younger candidate ahead of the convention. A group within the PDP known as “Renaissance,’’ had recently endorsed former Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel, for the party’s chairmanship position. Reacting to the endorsement, Babatope said George has the experience, maturity and passion, more than anything else was required to reposition the party so will not step down. Re: Buhari, Buratai, And The Python Panacea

Image
Re: Buhari, Buratai, And The Python Panacea  One Emmanuel Ugwu wrote and published the article “Buhari, Buratai, and the Python Panacea” that has been published on several online platforms. Ugwu should be commended for this piece not because it was a work of art or some remarkable masterpiece but because in that single rant he was able to lay bare what ails the southeast of Nigeria. From this writer it became apparent that the problem of the Igbo nationality is that too many great minds from that ethnic stock have taken the concept of being gentlemen too far to an extent that they have handed their fate and that of the entire geo-political zone over to frothing rabid fellows like the writer and the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu. The distortion of facts overseen by such characters take on an hallucinatory quality to an extent that one is constantly having ...
