INEC will obey timely, legitimate amendment to Electoral Act – National Commissioner

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday said it would obey any timely and legitimate amendment to Electoral Act. A National Commissioner in the commission, Okechukwu Ibeanu, stated this in Abuja, at the backdrop of the proposed amendment to the Act by the House of Representatives with regard to order of 2019 general elections. The lawmakers began the amendment process on Tuesday, barely two weeks after INEC released time-table for the elections. In the proposal, the National Assembly election would hold first, followed by Governorship and House of Assembly, and Presidential election to be conducted last. The amendment passed first reading on Tuesday after the House received the report of its Committee on Electoral Matters on the electoral process and need to amend the Electoral Act 2010. President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, on Monday, urged the federal government to ameliorate the hardships often encountered by Nigerians who apply for international passport by ensuring the availability of the document. Saraki gave the charge to the ‎authorities of the Nigeria Immigration Service while commissioning a new passport office at the National Assembly. He described as worrisome a situation where Nigerians who applied for international passports had to wait for a long time before the passports were delivered to them. The President of the Senate, according to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sanni Onogu, however, lauded the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Muhammad Babandede, for the “good initiative” of locating a passport office at the National Assembly. NASS to amend Local Content Act following Egina probe

The Senate has said it will amend the Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Content Development (NOGICD Act), 2010, noting that the existing law was not achieving the aims for which it was enacted, . The decision of the Senate was reached by the Ad-Hoc Committee currently investigating local content and cost variation on the $16 billion Egina Deep Sea oil project. The committee is led by Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (APC, Lagos). Disclosing the need by the Senate to amend the Act, Senator Adeola declared that investigations by the lawmakers had shown loopholes in the local content law being exploited by foreign companies with some local collaborators. He said: “From what we are discovering in this investigation, it is clear that the Local Content Act is not achieving much result, with Nigeria losing billions in expatriated hard currency and not much local skill or transfer of technology taking place.” He said the new amendment to the Act woul...

Fulani herdsmen storm Ogun to ‘settle and graze’

No fewer than twenty Fulani herdsmen have arrived in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. According to the herdsmen, they were in the state to “settle and graze”. This was made known by the Ogun State Police Command in a statement on Monday through its spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi. Oyeyemi said the herdsmen have been profiled and that though anyone was free to reside in any part of the country, the condition under which the herdsmen came into the city called for caution. He, however, advised members of the public to go about their businesses without any fear.
